State income tax in the state of West Virginia is slowly increasing and ranges from three percent to six and a half percent, based on yearly income.
State income tax is meant to help pay for public programs and services such as the military and police. This means everyone in the state has to pay the tax that is automatically taken out of their accounts. Here at WVWC students that partake in the work study program are also being taxed. Is this a bad thing for everyday workers trying to make extra cash?
Nate Hulver is a sophomore here at WVWC and is a work study employee where he works in the library on campus. “Growing up I always thought the most sacrificing job (Being in law enforcement) should be paid more than office workers.” Hulver said. Officers risk their life everyday and all they receive is our income taxes. “State income taxes are a good thing and morally correct since our government won’t pay their workers” Hulver stated. Morally state income taxes are good in order to help our government keep law enforcement functioning.
Marimo Akita is also a sophomore here at WVWC and works in the library as well. “The small amount that the state takes from each paycheck is rarely noticeable considering we don’t make enough to tell the difference” Akita stated. The many different taxes different jobs take make it hard to notice which one is which, as for the state income tax it is benefiting everyone that pays them as well by offering a system of protection.
Even though just two student workers were interviewed, many students don’t even recognize they are being taxed or where that money is going. Overall the students here at WVWC don’t view these taxes as a bad thing, even some students support it.
