A Summer Of Discovery: One Students’ Journey to Global Learning

Choosing to step out of her comfort zone, one student is embracing the opportunity to travel abroad this summer and gain experiences that shape academic goals and personal perspective.

Study abroad programs provide students with a chance to expand learning beyond the traditional classroom. Through hands-on experiences, students can immerse themselves into new cultures and experiences that broaden their understanding of the world’s vast diversity.

Early in the spring semester, the Wesleyan honors program presented an opportunity to apply for scholarships to do just that. Education major Jordan Groves quickly recognized the value of this opportunity and decided to apply.

While many students express interest in studying abroad, financial concerns can sometimes create hesitation. However, scholarship opportunities can make these experiences more accessible and encourage students to pursue similar initiatives.

“The process was super simple and my study abroad advisor, Dr. Bailey, answered many questions along the way. After going through the application process, a Wesleyan alum helped fund my scholarship. Center for International Studies, CIS Abroad, is the study abroad program I applied through for the Summer in Greece. Other study abroad opportunities are offered through various programs. While my program is on a fast track because it is earlier in the summer, CIS Abroad has been clear about what I need to do and has been very helpful about tips for studying abroad,” explains Groves.

Programs such as these not only help reduce financial burden but provide structured guidance to help students feel comfortable navigating a process that at times can feel intimidating. Both advisors and alumni support play an important role in ensuring students are prepared logistically, academically, and financially for their journey.

“I know I will be challenged with balancing school life while also trying to enjoy the opportunities and experiences to learn about the country and their culture. I think this will help teach me that while yes, traditional education is important, it is just as important to learn by taking chances and through the experiences,” Groves states.

Overall, Groves encourages this opportunity for anyone who is craving an experience of a lifetime and an opportunity she will never forget. She recommends other students explore this opportunity as well. “If there is one thing I have learned through this experience, it is to take chances and opportunities even if it is out of your comfort zone!”

With over 100 courses to choose from and the opportunity to explore a variety of different locations, the experience of studying abroad can shift cultural perspectives, strengthen appreciation for cultural diversity, and provide meaningful steps towards personal growth.
