After nearly a month of heavy snowfall, icy roads, and class cancellations, students have been adjusting to an inconsistent start to the spring semester—while also gaining an unexpected chance to create snowy memories.
Buckhannon has felt like a real-life snow globe throughout January, with campus blanketed in white and sidewalks glazed over by days of freezing rain. Two weeks of steady snowfall were followed by nearly two more weeks of freezing temperatures, leaving students watching weather alerts as closely. Just as the snow began to melt, French Creek Freddie spotted his shadow and predicted six more weeks of winter, reminding everyone that spring may still be a long way off.
Although the constant gray skies and interrupted routines have contributed to a seasonal slump, many students have found ways to stay positive. Instead of letting the weather completely derail the semester, students have been making the most of the time indoors and the rare opportunity to slow down.
During the campus shutdown, Bobcat Entertainment quickly stepped in with activities like snow day trivia, giving students a way to stay connected while stuck inside. Others embraced the snow head-on, creating an impressive collection of snowmen and “snowy friends” across campus. Between the chapel slope and open grassy areas, students could be seen sledding, making snow angels, and even starting playful snowball fights.
“Even though the snow days built up at the beginning of the semester, it was a nice break to slow down and take time for myself,” said student Kaylie Brinkman, who participated in the snowman building contest. “Personally, I used the time to study material for the exams I knew I would have once I returned. I had extra time to organize assignments and plan ahead for the semester. Overall, it was a nice reset that allowed me to organize my thoughts.”
While the snow days provided time for rest and relaxation, they also sparked concerns about professors falling behind on course content. Brinkman added, “Things were a little stressful coming back, but most professors were very understanding, and all my exams were moved accordingly. Even over Zoom and email, professors were responsive and helpful with material.”
Despite the frustration that comes with delays and uncertainty, this winter has reminded students of the value of slowing down. Snow days can interrupt plans, but they also offer space to recharge, reconnect, and enjoy the simple joy of being a college student in the middle of a winter wonderland. After all, when life gives you snowflakes, build a snowman.
