Campus Voices: Favorite College Subjects

By: Dewand Hemsley

Across campus, students enthusiastically shared the college subjects that inspire them most, expressing how these courses spark curiosity, strengthen essential skills, and influence their personal growth, future ambitions, and long-term professional career goals beyond graduation.

This project explores what college subjects students enjoy most and why these classes matter to them. Through their answers, we learn how academic interests connect to real-life goals, spark personal growth, and shape their future careers. Students share how their passions in the classroom inspire creativity, build confidence, and guide them toward success both in college and beyond.

At West Virginia Wesleyan College, senior Matt Sviatko shared his passion for computer science and how it connects to his goals beyond the classroom. “Computer science is my favorite class,” Sviatko said. “I enjoy it because it has computers in it, and it will help me become a computer engineer.” He explained that technology has always fascinated him, and learning to code gives him the tools to solve problems and build creative projects.

As a dedicated student-athlete on the football team, Sviatko balances academics and athletics with determination and discipline. His experience on the field has taught him the importance of teamwork, patience, and problem solving, skills that also apply to his major. He chose computer science because of his love for innovation and the challenge of understanding how technology shapes the world. “I chose computer science because I enjoy coding and making things digitally. It came naturally to me,” Sviatko said. He believes that the logical thinking and creativity required in programming will continue to help him both academically and professionally. Looking ahead, Sviatko hopes to use his degree to design and improve software systems that make everyday life easier for people. His goal is to work in a field where he can continue learning and use technology to create positive change.

Another student, Chase David Gora, a sophomore at West Virginia Wesleyan College, expressed a different but equally strong passion. Gora shared that his favorite class right now is Television Broadcasting. He explained that he enjoys this class because it’s very hands-on, which is his favorite way to learn. “I think this class will help me in my future career because I want to be a sports broadcaster, and this class has gotten me more comfortable on camera,” Gora said.

Gora’s passion for sports and broadcasting shows through his excitement for learning and improving his on-camera skills. He enjoys the creative process of writing scripts, preparing reports, and presenting live content. The class has allowed him to gain confidence, practice professionalism, and develop communication skills that will help him in his future career. As he continues his studies at WVWC, Gora hopes to build on this experience and prepare for a successful future in the world of sports media, where he can combine his love for athletics and storytelling.
