During the fall season, several sports compete to make it to the playoffs. Drawing to the end of October, we can begin to critically look at where these sports lie in their conferences.
Starting with the WVWC football team, we can see a record of 0-6 within the conference season. We can expect the team to be out in terms of advancing to playoffs but can hope to see improvement through the off season.
Looking at men’s soccer, the team is currently 2-8-2 so far in the season. With this record, it will be difficult to secure a spot in the MEC playoffs. This late in the season, we could hope to see a turnaround but qualifications for the tournament seem unlikely.
Women’s soccer has a fair conference record of 5-7-1 as of now. This record puts the Lady Bobcats in a position where qualification is not guaranteed but very possible. At this point in the season the women’s team is looking to win the remaining season games to secure the spot in playoffs.
Venla Paunonen, a senior player for the women’s soccer team stated “I believe that we will make it because we all work so hard and it was a goal to make it”.
The Lady Bobcats set a goal to make it to the playoffs this year, and advance further than last year’s chance at the tournament.
Paunonen says, “We all have the mindset that we will make it and we all believe that we will.”
Paunonen finishes her thoughts by stating “There’s always room for improvement but overall the season has gone good.”
Volleyball is seeing a great season as their record is 6-4 for conference play currently. With these numbers, we can expect the team to make it to the MEC tournament. The remaining games in the season will determine where they stand in terms of ranking for the playoff tournament.
With the current stats for WVWC’s fall sports we can look forward to some of the Bobcat teams to move onto playoffs. These tournaments will typically begin around November and continue through until the championships.
Our Lady Bobcats pave the way for Wesleyan to make strides into the MEC tournaments. As seasons come to an end for these fall sports we can hope to see advancements farther into the tournaments as well.
Although not all teams can be expected to advance, we can look forward to seeing their progress on the off seasons as they build off of what was learned to compete in the next conference season.
