Buckhannon, West Virginia, offers a variety of opportunities for students attending West Virginia Wesleyan College, providing both financial support and great work experience.​

On-Campus Employment

WVWC facilitates several on-campus job opportunities for students. One notable position is with Aladdin Campus Dining, where students assist in food preparation and service. This role not only provides income but also fosters teamwork and customer service skills. Many students say it’s a great way to meet new people, learn how to multitask under pressure, and feel more connected to campus life. If serving food does not interest you, there are plenty of other opportunities for students to make money and gain experience. For example, my good friend Eli Brogan, works as a Resident Director here at Wesleyan. Eli told me, “Making the money is great but meeting the people I have met through this experience has been the highlight.”

Community Engagement and Service

The Center for Community Engagement & Leadership Development (CCE) at WVWC offers the Wesleyan Service Scholars (WSS) program, allowing students to contribute to the local community. By dedicating 4–6 hours weekly to community service, students earn a $3,000 per year scholarship, totaling $12,000 over four years. In the 2023–2024 academic year, students contributed nearly 10,000 service hours to Upshur County, enhancing their professional skills while making a positive impact; According to mytownwv.com.

Off-Campus Employment

Buckhannon’s local businesses also offer part-time positions suitable for students. For instance, Walmart provides roles such as stockers and janitorial staff with flexible hours and competitive pay. Similarly, Kroger and Little General Convenience Stores have openings for grocery clerks and cashiers, offering students the chance to gain retail experience. These jobs are especially helpful for students trying to juggle classes and other hobbies, and many find that the consistent hours and friendly coworkers make the work environment more enjoyable than expected. Plus, it’s a great way to get to know the local community beyond campus. My old friend Brad used to work for DoorDash which is another opportunity for students to make some extra cash during the week and weekends.

Conclusion

Buckhannon has plenty of opportunities for WVWC students, from on-campus jobs to community service to off-campus positions. These roles offer financial support, skill development, and a deeper connection to the local community, upgrading the overall college experience. For some students, working in Buckhannon isn’t just about earning a paycheck, it’s about building relationships, gaining confidence, and feeling like an actual part of the town they’ll call home for four years.
