As the leaves change and the air grows crisp, Buckhannon is gearing up for a season packed with events that blend small-town charm, college energy, and creative flair, offering something for every student looking to unwind, connect, or get inspired.

October in Buckhannon brings a vibrant mix of seasonal celebration, community connection, and creative exploration. From haunted trails to heartfelt tributes, the calendar offers something for every interest.

Thrills and Chills

Maniac Mountain Haunted Trail runs every Friday and Saturday in October, delivering Appalachian horror with jump scares, eerie storytelling, and spine-tingling atmosphere. For those who prefer their fall festivities with a touch of whimsy, Buckhannon’s downtown hosts the Pumpkin Scarecrow Contest all month long. Local businesses and students compete with imaginative displays; think STEM-themed scarecrows or artistic nods to campus life.

Science and Storytelling

On October 18, the Upshur County Ghost Walk blends local folklore with theatrical storytelling in a guided downtown tour—perfect for history buffs and thrill-seekers alike. Later in the month, WVWC’s Planetarium Show: Autumn Skies invites stargazers to explore seasonal constellations and cultural astronomy in an immersive campus experience.

Nature and Reflection

Audra State Park is a must-visit this time of year, with oaks, maples, and hickories turning brilliant shades of red, gold, and orange. “Going for a drive and looking at the beautiful West Virginia hills is a wonderful way to relax,” says Buckhannon resident Brian Hoover. For those seeking wellness and connection, the Save A Life Day Health Fair on October 25 and the Rotary Chicken Roast on October 27 offer meaningful ways to engage with the community.

As the season shifts, November brings reflection and festivity. The Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11 honors local heroes with music and student-led tributes. That same week, Designer Bag Bingo on November 12 adds a playful twist to philanthropy with prizes and laughter.

Art and Flavor

Art lovers can enjoy the Fall Art Walk in early November, where local galleries showcase seasonal works, ideal for students who blend science and creativity. Fish Hawk Acres returns with a November Wine Dinner, pairing curated wines with autumn flavors in a relaxed farm setting.

Holiday Kickoff

The season wraps up with Buckhannon’s Holiday Preview Night in late November. Boutiques and cafés stay open late with festive décor, discounts, and hot cocoa, a cozy way to welcome winter and support local businesses.

Whether you’re craving adrenaline, artistry, or advocacy, Buckhannon’s fall lineup offers a rich tapestry of experiences to connect, create, and celebrate the season.
