Spring Sing’s HoeDown Throwdown

By: Nora Carroll

On February 16, 2025 the WV Strawberry Festival named a new queen, West VOne of the biggest events of the year, and the last event of Greek Week: Spring Sing! But this year, there’s a huge twist… the theme is country!

Spring Sing is a beloved tradition at West Virginia Wesleyan College that has been going on for decades. It is a huge part of Greek Week. The winners earn 50 points onto their total score for winning, potentially changing the overall outcome of the games. It is a day where all nine of the Greek Life organizations come together to sing and dance, as long as it keeps up with the yearly theme.

Last year the Spring Sing and Greek Week winners were the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi. They were back to back champions, and are looking to take home the gold a third year in a row. Remmy Lohr is attempting to bring the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi another victory.

“Winning is such an awesome feeling, but it’s not the most important. Being able to share such special moments with sisters  means more to me,” Lohr said, “Aside from this, I do feel like the stakes are high after winning twice, so I am nervous, but excited to share our performance with everyone.”

Alpha Xi Delta is also on the hunt to take their title back. Alpha Xi Delta has historically been the sorority with the most Greek Week and Spring Sing wins, and after two years without the title, their director, Heidi Gildley, and the rest of the sisters are ready to fight for the title.

“As director, I’ve really been focusing on creating a theme that pays tribute to the history and culture of Country music with a compelling storyline,” Gidley said, “My sisters have been very dedicated to bringing my vision to life, learning eye catching choreography and breathtaking lifts and tricks, as well as helping me set the scene with props and costumes.”

The fraternities have much different, slightly less serious, mentalities coming into Spring Sing, but they still are fighting to win it all. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Theta Chi’s Spring Sing chair, Ashton Nardella, to discuss how the fraternities handle preparation for Spring Sing.

“I feel like the sororities, I’ll be completely honest, have a higher caliber of workmanship…” Nardella states, “Not like the fraternities, they try their best, but the sororities really have something really incredible. I would say that we are going to do really well.”

Spring Sing is not just an event to have Greek Life go head to head, but it is an opportunity to bring the Wesleyan community together, many people are in attendance, from faculty, students, alumni, and family. The event also gives an opportunity for building stronger relationships within organizations.

So, be ready for this year’s big show on April 26, 2025! It will be a huge hoedown throwdown, and you will not want to miss it!
