Each fall, WVWC joins campuses nationwide in celebrating Colors Day, a tradition that invites students, faculty, alumni, and fans to wear their school’s colors to show their pride. For the Bobcat Community, it means a vibrant sea of orange and black.
Launched nationally in 2004 by the Collegiate Licensing Company, College Colors Day was created to unite communities through school spirit and mark the start of the college football season. It’s now observed by hundreds of institutions across the United States, from large state universities to small liberal arts colleges. The celebration typically falls on the Friday before Labor Day, kicking off the academic year with enthusiasm and In recent years, the event has gained traction on social media, with millions of participants sharing photos using hashtags like #CollegeColorsDay and #ShowYourColors.
West Virginia Wesleyan began participating in the early 2010s, gradually weaving the tradition into its fall semester. Today, it is a staple of campus life, often paired with pep rallies, photo contests, and outreach events.
On College Colors Day, Wesleyan comes alive. Students sport orange and black gear, from vintage sweatshirts to custom tees, while faculty and staff decorate offices and classrooms with banners, streamers, and memorabilia. The campus buzzes with excitement, and #WVWCHereYouCan lights up social media as alumni across the country post photos in their Wesleyan colors, sharing memories and messages of support.
“Wearing Wesleyan colors isn’t just tradition, it’s a celebration of every student’s journey, no matter their major, background, or dream,” said Dr. Delaney, Physics Department Chair, reflecting on the day’s significance.
More than just a celebration of fashion, College Colors Day reflects a deeper sense of identity and connection. It is a moment for students to feel part of something larger, for alumni to reconnect, and for the college to highlight its enduring spirit. Whether you are a first-year student or a graduate reminiscing about campus life, wearing orange and black becomes a symbol of pride and continuity.
Wesleyan also uses the tradition to engage prospective students. Events like Orange and Black Day, which recognize scholarship recipients and introduce families to campus life, often align with the spirit of College Colors Day, reinforcing Wesleyan’s commitment to excellence and community.
As the 21st anniversary of College Colors Day was celebrated nationally, West Virginia Wesleyan continued to embrace the tradition with creativity and heart. From Buckhannon to beyond, the orange and black wave reminds us that college pride is not just about colors, it’s about legacy, belonging, and the joy of being a Bobcat.
So, when fall rolls around, wear your colors proudly. At Wesleyan, orange and black aren’t just a palette, they are a promise.
