Buckhannon is home to many lakes, rivers, mountains, and outdoor areas waiting to be explored and loved.
Fishing Areas
Ever since I arrived in Buckhannon 3 years ago, my freshman year, I picked up my fishing rod almost every weekend because there are so many spots to catch fish around this small town. In the range of 1 to 35 minutes, there are over 5 different bodies of water available to the public for fishing. One of my very good friends, Cole Shearer, would teach me everything I needed to know about fishing when I got to Buckhannon. “The Buckhannon River is definitely one of the top places to fish around here,” said Cole. “It’s close enough to town, but once you’re out on the water, it feels like you’re in your own little world. There’s a variety of fish, but smallmouth bass is what most anglers come for.”
Cole always wanted to head to the West Virginia Wildlife Management Area for some of the best fishing spots along the river. “If you’re willing to hike a bit, you can find quieter spots upstream.” My other friend Luke Burner, owns a house on the Buckhannon river a couple miles upstream where Cole Shearer and himself have caught Muskies, which are known to be a fish of a thousand casts.
More Outdoor Adventures Around Buckhannon
For those looking to explore even more of what Buckhannon’s surroundings have to offer. Audra State Park is a great choice if you love hiking. There are several trails there with beautiful views of the river, and it’s a nice way to enjoy a day outdoors without going too far from town.
Audra Park is perfect for families and casual hikers, offering everything from easy trails to scenic picnic spots. The park’s Middle Fork River provides the ideal spot for a relaxing day in nature.
Finally, one time Cole took me to a spot on Stonecoal Lake which is about 20 minutes away from Buckhannon, but it is for sure a hidden gem. The atmosphere alone is what made the time there so peaceful. If it wasn’t for the fact that the environment around us was beautiful, catching no fish would have ruined our days. It is a great place to hike, swim, fish, and even camp out with your family and friends.
