There are several housing options available at West Virginia Wesleyan College; including standard, premium, and off-campus housing. Each of these housing options varies in price, amenities, and experience.
Standard housing is the cheapest option for housing. According to the West Virginia Wesleyan College room rates sheet, standard housing will cost $5,364 per year, and $2,682 per semester for a double room. There is the option to live in a single room with one set of furniture, or a double as a single room, which allows you to have two sets of furniture. However, these options are available at a higher price, ringing in at $7,166 and $7,816 respectively. Standard housing also features communal-style bathrooms and no air conditioning, excluding McCuskey Hall which offers window AC units. Agnes Howard Hall offers both suite-style and communal-style bathrooms.
The buildings that offer standard housing are Agnes Howard Hall, Jenkins Hall, Holloway Hall, and McCuskey Hall. Agnes Howard Hall is an upperclassman, all girls dorm, and Holloway Hall is also an all girls dorm excluding the third floor which will be an all-inclusive floor. Benedum Hall is normally a standard dorm but will be offline next year. Jenkins Hall will also transition to an all boys dorm next year.
“The main difference between standard and premium housing has to be the air conditioning,” says Dancia Propst, a Junior at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Propst says, “I have had a really good experience in standard housing and I would definitely recommend it. Students should research their housing options and reach out to the Campus Life Office with any questions.”
The next type of housing offered at West Virginia Wesleyan College is premium housing. The WVWC room rate sheet lists premium housing at a price of $8,416 per year, and $4,208 per semester. There is also the option to live in a single dorm in premium housing for the price of $9,840 per year. Premium housing offers suite-style bathrooms, as well as air conditioning. Doney Hall, an upperclassmen dorm, is considered premium housing, however, it is priced at $7,816 per year. Doney Hall is air conditioned, but offers communal style bathrooms. The buildings that offer premium housing are Fleming Hall and Dunn Hall.
“I think premium housing offers better room size and accommodations than standard housing,” says Elizabeth Mazzariello, an MBA student at West Virginia Wesleyan College. Mazzariello says, “Having suite-style bathrooms instead of communal bathrooms is the biggest perk of standard housing, but the type of housing depends on the person and their wants and needs. Students should also weigh the pros and cons of each building, such as price and amenities.”
West Virginia Wesleyan College also offers a limited number of off-campus housing. This option is available to upperclassmen students and costs $8,928 per year, and $4,464 per semester. Off-campus housing is available on a first come first serve basis and can be very competitive. These houses are all located within walking distance of campus.
“There are several differences between off-campus housing and other housing options,” says Abby Bowe, a senior at West Virginia Wesleyan College, “having no RA and my own kitchen makes me feel like I am in charge of my own space.” Bowe says, “I have loved living off campus, but I would not recommend it to students who are not juniors or seniors. It can be a bit isolating, and I believe it is important for freshmen and sophomores to gain the residential experience.” Bowe also says that, “students should be aware of the price. Houses are more expensive, but I used to live in a premium dorm and I buy groceries that are cheaper than a meal plan, so for me I have saved money.”
