Lambda Pi Eta Welcomes New Members

By: Faith Yoho

The Beta Beta chapter of Lambda Pi Eta has welcomed six new members.

On October 10, 2023, the Beta Beta chapter of Lambda Pi Eta at West Virginia Wesleyan College held its Fall 2023 induction ceremony. Jason Wilson, Peter D’Avanzo, Sarah McCall, Danica Propst, Faith Yoho, and Alexis Abalos (not present), were invited to join the honor society. The inductees were surrounded by family and friends as they were honored for their academic successes.

According to the National Communication Association, having started in 1988, Lambda Pi Eta is the association’s official honor society and was officially named as such in 1995. Lambda Pi Eta is also a member of the Association of College Honor Societies. There are over 500 Chapters nationally.

Also according to the National Communication Association website, the name Lambda Pi Eta comes from “the three ingredients of persuasion, as described by Aristotle in Rhetoric. Lambda represents logos, which means logic; Pi represents pathos, which represents emotion; and Eta represents ethos, which stands for character, credibility, and ethics.”

“Membership in Lambda Pi Eta is reserved for students who have declared their interest in the field of communication and have achieved high academic success. To be considered for membership, a student must have completed at least sixty credit hours in undergraduate courses and twelve hours of communication courses. A student must also have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and a grade point average of 3.25 in their communication classes. A student must also be in the top 35% of their graduating class”, Beta Beta chapter president Chloe Sotomayor said during the ceremony.

New inductee Danica Propst said, “I was honored to join Lambda Pi Eta after putting in lots of time and energy into communication. It was a really good feeling to be recognized for your accomplishments in that setting.”

The ceremony was held in the Greek Alumni Room of the Virginia Thoma Law Center for the Performing Arts. The ceremony was held by the Beta Beta chapter president, Sotomayor, and the Department Chair, Dr. Nancy Bressler. In attendance were assistant professor, Dr. Alexis De Coning, and Dr. Lynn Linder, the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty.

Abby Bowe, a Wesleyan senior who was in attendance, said, “I was very honored to be invited to witness close friends of mine advance their careers and be inducted into Lambda Pi Eta. I love being able to celebrate my friends’ successes and experience other departments’ traditions on campus. Being a part of such a close-knit community in which the professors possess immense admiration and pride for their students is something I love about Wesleyan.”

Congratulations to all new members of Lambda Pi Eta. They have worked hard to receive such an honor and will no doubt continue to do so. We here at The Pharos look forward to witnessing their future successes and celebrating new members in the future.
