There are so many different fall activities to choose from in West Virginia. Here are some of the top recommendations around the Buckhannon area. 

As the leaves are quickly falling, it’s time to start planning for some fall family fun. West Virginia is known for its beautiful fall foliage and the Appalachian mountain range. These 3 fun fall activities include the great outdoors and its beautiful scenery. 

The West Virginia Wildlife Center 

The West Virginia Wildlife Center is Located in Upshur County, 12 miles south of Buckhannon on State Route 20. It is a wildlife sanctuary and educational facility dedicated to showcasing the state’s native wildlife species. It provides visitors with an opportunity to observe and learn about animals such as bobcats, black bears, and river otters in a naturalistic setting. The center serves as a vital resource for wildlife conservation and education, offering insights into the diverse wildlife that inhabits the region and the importance of preserving their natural habitats.

When coming to the wildlife center they do charge a small fee of $2-4 per visitor. They also offer discounts for families and large groups. They also have some events throughout the year to encourage visitors to come. They are open from 9-3 every day through March. 

Audra State Park 

Audra State Park is a picturesque outdoor destination in West Virginia. Located in Barbour and Upshur Counties, this park is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, featuring the Middle Fork River, rocky overhangs, and dense forests. Visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, picnicking, camping, and swimming in the refreshing river. The park also offers opportunities for wildlife observation and serves as a serene retreat for those seeking a connection with nature in a tranquil and scenic environment.

In Audra, there are many different picturesque hikes to do with your family and friends. 

The first trail is Alum Cave Nature Trail which is a shorter loop trail, that provides a family-friendly and educational experience. Next is the Riverside Trail as the name suggests, this trail runs along the banks of the Middle Fork River. It offers a peaceful and scenic hike, with opportunities for birdwatching and enjoying the tranquil waters. Lastly is the overlook Trail, this moderate trail takes hikers to an overlook that provides panoramic views of the surrounding forest and river. It’s a bit more challenging than some of the other trails, making it suitable for those seeking a moderate level of exertion.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum

The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, located in Weston, West Virginia, is a historic and imposing mental health facility with a fascinating past. Built in the mid-19th century, it was originally known as the Weston State Hospital and was designed to be a model for the humane treatment of the mentally ill. It is one of the largest hand-cut stone masonry buildings in the United States and is known for its stunning Gothic architecture.

At this location, they offer many fun things to do from historic tours, ghost tours, special events, and photography and exploration. It offers an opportunity for visitors to learn about the evolution of mental health treatment, explore a remarkable architectural gem, and engage in paranormal experiences
