Wes Moore becomes the first African American Governor of the state of Maryland

By: Amir Franklin-Branch

Wes Moore was born in Takoma Park, Maryland, part of the most lucrative african american county in America. Moore did his primary schooling at Forge Valley Military Academy and College, where he obtained his associate’s degree in 1998. After college, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

After Moore served, he went back to college and earned his bachelor’s degree in international relations and economics at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Moore was the first African American Rhodes Scholar in John Hopkins university. While studying at John Hopkins, he interned in Baltimore’s
former mayor’s office. He also obtained his master’s degree in international relations from Wolfson College at Oxford.

After his schooling, Moore did a tour in Afghanistan as a captain with the 82nd airborne division, leading soldiers on the front lines. When he returned home from the tour, Moore served as a white house member where he advised issues of national security and international relations, putting his degree to hard work.

Moore’s next adventure in life took a different turn when he began to write books in 2010. Moore wrote “The Other Wes Moore”, a book about the fragile nature of opportunity in America, which became a new york best seller. Moore’s latest book “Five Days” tells us the unseen, unheard story of Baltimore, specifically
Baltimore City, the days following the death of Freddie Gray by way of police brutality in 2015.

Moore, like he often does, pivoted in life again, starting a business called BridgeEdU. The business helps freshmen in college prepare for long-term success, teaching them how to navigate college. This business really helps those who don’t have support at home or who are first-generation students. BridgeEdU was acquired by Edquity, a student success platform, in 2018. Moore is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity incorporated, where he is a part of the Eta Eta Lambda Chapter. He continues to help spearhead programs with other members of the chapter even with his busy work schedule. As Wes Moore starts his political career with extreme honor in his community, this army veteran is certainly off to a great note for this next journey in his quest for life.
