Lambda Pi Eta Adds Two New Members

By: Emily Reed

Lambda Pi Eta is the official worldwide honor society of the National Communication Association. Two new students have been recognized for their outstanding work in the Communication department.

On Tuesday, February 21, 2023, the society inducted Hunter Dierlam and Shelby Kennedy. The honor society is now filled with nine total students: Anthony Damcott, Timothy Walker, Iris Kloenich, Jonathan Stamey, Dylan Pauley, Emily Reed, Chloe Sotomayor, Hunter Dierlam, and Shelby Kennedy. Friends, family, and fellow peers were invited to the induction to honor these students on their collegiate accomplishments.

According to the National Communication Association website, Lambda Pi Eta is represented by the Greek letters that Aristotle described in his book Rhetoric, by the three modes of persuasion. Logos stands for logic, pathos relates to emotion, and ethos to character credibility and ethics. Lambda Pi Eta was founded by the students of the department of communication at the University of Arkansas in 1985, and today there are over 600 chapters of Lambda Pi Eta nationwide. The purpose of the honor society is to recognize, foster, and reward outstanding scholastic achievements, to stimulate interest in the field of communication, to provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication, to promote and encourage professional development among communication majors, to establish and maintain relationships with mutual understanding between faculty and students, and to explore further options after graduation.

The membership in Lambda Pi Eta is composed of undergraduate students who have declared an interest in the field of communication and who have achieved a high level of academic excellence. In order to be eligible for membership, students must have completed sixty semester hours in undergraduate courses, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0, and have completed twelve semester hours in communication courses with a grade point average of at least 3.5 in those courses. The society will graduate seven of the nine total members in May of 2023. This includes current President Anthony Damcott, Vice President Timothy Walker, and secretary Iris Kloenich. Rising seniors, Chloe Sotomayor and Hunter Dierlam will maintain their membership with the honor society and can look forward to holding new positions within the chapter. Chloe Sotomayor states that she is very excited to see what the future holds for the chapter and is eager to see which of her fellow classmates are able to withhold the standards of the honor society to be inducted into the next upcoming chapter.
