WVWC Greek Life, more than just Greek people

Defying stereotypes of what many view Greek Life participants is just some of what WVWC Greek Life members bring to the table. Many members of WVWC Greek Life system are a part of a multitude of organizations.

The stereotypical Greek Life member image that we see a lot in different types of media is just what happens here at West Virginia Wesleyan College (WVWC). Many of our students hold various different participating in a lot of different organizations. WVWC’s Greek Life system is not a system which promotes solidarity. With a large portion of students that are in the WVWC Greek Life system being involved in a lot of different on-campus and off-campus organizations and activities, the WVWC Greek Life system allows for these students to excel in their other involvements and does not monopolize the student’s time.

One member of WVWC Greek Life is Destry Nelson. Nelson is a member of the WVWC Men’s Track and Field team, Benzene Ring, and Student Art League. Nelson competes in the 400M, 800M, and the decathlon for the Wesleyan Men’s Track and Field team.

I was able to ask Nelson about how he manages his time as a student athlete and being involved in Greek Life.

“When it comes to balancing my time, it definitely can be challenging. I have personally found that as long as I do not procrastinate my assignments too much and stay on top of my responsibilities, having the time to apart of Greek Life and other organizations is not too difficult,” Nelson said.

As Nelson stated in his answer, time management is very important to be organized when involved in various organizations and clubs. Something that I think that Greek Life members naturally develop, that is time management.

It is also important to be part of a lot of different organizations on a small campus such as Wesleyan. Being apart of a small campus, it is crucial to be apart of as much as you can to make more friends and better connections.

Nelson added this about joining a lot of different organizations and clubs, “At Wesleyan, I feel like a large part of the experience is to be a part of organizations on campus. Getting involved on campus is the best wat to make new friends and meet those that share the same interests and goals as you. As a result of this, being able to be apart of multiple organizations is pretty important”.

Nelson is just one of many examples of current Wesleyan students who is a member of a WVWC Greek Life organization and has many other involvements. Students being able to be involved in various on-campus and off-campus organizations allows for the entire population of the WVWC Greek Life system to benefit from students being more well-rounded here at WVWC.

Nelson, along with many others, allow for the reputation of WVWC Greek Life organizations to grow positively and stray away from the typical stereotype that we see a lot of involving a lot of Greek Life systems. WVWC Greek Life is greatly benefited from students like Carpenter and Nelson in allowing them to be able to reach a lot of more of the Wesleyan campus.
