Freshmen Council: The New Organization & What It’s All About

By: Danica Propst

The establishment of the new FYEX program ushers in a new administrative body on campus- Freshmen Council.

Freshmen council is a democratic body that includes a member from each of the 17 freshmen year experience classes. The representatives were voted into office by their classmates in each group in October. Since then, they have met weekly to discuss issues that are brought to them that are especially important for new students.

Anthony Baker, a representative on the council, says “I think that any group that is organized to try to improve people’s experiences is essential. It gives students a voice and allows us to feel respected and like we’re a part of the direction the school goes in. For example, issues have been raised so far about making sure we have activities on campus that bond classes of students together. This will help everyone feel a lot more comfortable and again improve their experience. For that reason, I think having structures in place such as a freshmen council is crucial to any institution.”

During the first meeting, class offices were nominated and elected. Faith Yoho was elected president, LouMasi Lott was elected vice president, Haden Fincham was elected secretary, and Ella Gomez was elected treasurer.

Haden Fincham, secretary for the council says, “I wanted to run for office because I wanted to have some sort of role in the organization that I became a part of so that I can help make a positive change wherever I can.”

So far, the council has worked to arrange shuttles for international students to allow them to pick up groceries before Thanksgiving break starts and the dining hall closes for the week. They are also planning to host more events for freshmen students to participate in to foster a sense of unity in the class.

President Faith Yoho, when asked about what she foresees for the council’s future, stated “At the moment, I hope that we can address the issues of our peers in the freshmen class. I also hope that we can plan some events to bring the freshmen class together, as we will be spending the next four years together as Bobcats. I am honored to be elected as president of the class this year and am looking forward to serving the class to the best of my abilities to make a positive impact here at Wesleyan.”
