More Masters, More Careers

By: Devin Taylor

When coming out of high school very few students think about a master’s degree and most students try not even think about it because that’s just more school and not thinking about the benefits of it.

Wesleyan has a few Masters/Graduate programs. Wesleyan has the MBA program, Master of Athletic Training, master’s in nursing, and a master’s program in Creative writing. While these are great programs, with some of the policies Wesleyan has it could be better if they had more master’s programs for more majors.

One of the reasons is that, for some careers, a master’s degree would help a lot once they enter the real world. Another reason would be that it would bring more money to the school.

Athletes make up a good portion of the school and more master’s programs could equal more of those athletes staying at the school instead of either graduating and giving up the sport or transferring somewhere else. With those athletes staying and getting masters ultimately would equal more success for the athlete and the sports team they are a part of. More successful teams that compete in NCAA Division II have a lot of 5th year and 6th-year seniors. A good number of the students are getting their master’s degree as well as continuing playing so a lot of them see it as killing two birds with one stone: they’re able to continue playing the sport they love while also bettering their lives and careers with completion of a master’s program.
