The number of black student organizations on campus has increased. For a long time, the only black organization was the Black Student Union, but now we have three black fraternities to add to that, which that’s huge! Because they are new organizations, it might take a while for them to be recognized by the campus. But, considering the number of African American students we have on the campus, it’s great the college has become more welcoming to black organizations. The three black fraternities are Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. There is still work to be done on getting some black female organizations and sororities on campus such as Alpha Kappa Alpha and Zeta Phi Beta.
Now, with the rising number of black organizations on campus, that means they should be incorporated and thought of when hosting events, specifically Greek life events such as the Greek Games. It was noticed once the flyer came out for Greek Games, it was seen that not one black organization was on there. It is understood that a couple black organizations have only been on campus for about a year, but other black organizations, such as Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., have been on this campus for several years and have yet to be included by the school. These organizations have both made it known they are on campus and have been here for several years.
It is slightly disappointing to see these organizations excluded because African American students make up a good part of this college and would appreciate that the organizations that they are associated with would get shown more love. But, there is still hope that it will improve and be recognized campus wide.
