Why do students choose Wesleyan?

By: Jonathan Walker

West Virginia Wesleyan sits in the heart of Buckhannon, West Virginia surrounded by trees, brick buildings, and a pretty neighborhood. Wesleyan is a private institution with a population each year of 1600 students and faculty combined. The classroom sizes average about 19 students, and the ratio of students to professors is 13:1. Students choose Wesleyan for many different reasons: academics, location, social clubs, scenery, and majors. Wesleyan also provides a wide range of athletics. Wesleyan’s student body is made up of 44% student athletes.

I thought it best to ask students, so I asked some seniors, Isaac Dove and Ciana Bowen, why they chose West Virginia Wesleyan College. Dove said “When I think of Wesleyan, I think of home. Being on my own is the only part I don’t like.”

Bowen, a nursing major, said, “Wesleyan has so much to offer, that’s why I chose to come here.”

During my time here at Wesleyan, there are several majors that have stuck out to me such as Criminal Justice, Nursing, Communications, Athletic Training, and all of the Sciences. When high school seniors ask what majors they should take, these are the top suggestions. Most of the Criminal Justice majors double up by adding a Communication Minor. Communications, on the other hand, has a lot to offer such as being the DJ on the school’s radio station or writing for the school’s newspaper.

The nursing program is very prestigious, nationally ranked, and very hard to get into, however, it is one of the largest programs on campus. Athletic Training is a very popular major with many rigorous courses. The ATs and student ATs work very hard to keep our athletes in the best shape possible by providing prime care. The science department at Wesleyan also has a large span of majors they offer to students. Many students have the opportunity to work hands-on with indoor and outdoor activities.

West Virginia Wesleyan College is a great choice for offering so much to students on a small campus. From academics to student life, and athletics, every student has options. After you choose Wesleyan, you will be at your “home among the hills.”
