Service Scholars

By: Chloe Sotomayor

The Service Scholars Program here at West Virginia Wesleyan is an organization that provides community service throughout Upshur County. This organization offers many scholarship opportunities for students to join by recognizing their leadership abilities in their communities. Students are interviewed and chosen by their leadership skills and ability to strengthen their skills in the next four years in the program by working at their service sites. Students work at the Upshur County School, the local animal shelter, food pantries, police department, and clothing donation centers.

Two incoming freshmen, Hali Westcott and Roman Moore, were chosen for their experiences with community service throughout their high school careers. Both students are very active in the Upshur County community and greatly contribute to the Service Scholars organization.

Before entering college, Hali was president of her high school’s National Honor Society and National Art Honors Society, and held many other leadership positions in school organizations such as her soccer team and yearbook club. She works at the Parish House across from the Wesleyan campus. This donation center gives out necessities such as food packages, personal hygiene items, newborn baby packages, and holiday boxes across the Upshur County Community.

Another freshman, Roman Moore, was heavily involved in leadership positions such as
Pantry Club President and class Treasurer all throughout high school. He is now the Freshman Representative for the Wesleyan Think Tank Team. He is also a devoted member of the Wesleyan Track and Field team. He works at the Upshur County Middle School as a tutor and mentor for the students.

If you are interested in community involvement and service activities, contact Service Scholar representatives Andrew Moffa or Jessica Vincent for more information on how you can be involved and make a difference in your college or county’s community.
